The office assistant works under the direction of division manager, and assists in the management and assistance of the department or division. Work includes the exercise of initiative and independent judgment to assist the department in proper management. Duties include but are not limited to all personnel transactions. Verify and enter payroll for employees; maintains employee files; interviews, screens and refer callers open and screen mail; Order office supplies, answers various inquiries and schedule appointments. Ensure new employees have a copy of rules and regulations in the workplace; types correspondence and maintain various paper and computer files. Enter requisition for landfill; maintains confidential files and reports; performs related as required. High school diploma or G.E.D. Equivalent, considerable experience in responsible secretarial wok or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Considerable knowledge of modern office equipment such as computer, printer and calculator. Ability to make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures. Ability to type 40-50 WPM. Desired experience and knowledge in word processing software such as: Word-perfect, Quattro-Pro, Micro-Soft Word and Excel. Must have a valid Drivers License.
CUSTODIAN/HPD

Division: Direct Support
Rate Of Pay: $8.00/Hr
This is janitorial work with limited supervisory responsibilities. Work involves the responsibility for providing janitorial services at the required level in an assessed building or building area. Duties include the supervision of community workers. General supervision is received from the Division Manager. Performs, assigns, and inspects all janitorial functions at the Police Department and the Fire and Police Training Academy. Supervise community workers assigned to janitorial functions. Landscape around building including picking up paper, raking leaves, sweeping, etc. Keep inventory of supplies and ordering accountability for supplies including maintaining an inventory level of custodial supplies at an appropriate level for 24 hour a day, 7 day a week operation. Responsible for trash, and garbage removal from buildings daily. High School Diploma or GED equivalent required. Prior experience is preferred but not necessary. Prior supervisory experience is desired. This position requires a valid driver’s license and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Incumbent will be exposed to cleaning compounds/chemical including bleach, disinfectants, polish, wax, etc. Must be able to understand and follow departmental policies, city ordinances, OSHA standards and regulations, and federal and state statues. Incumbent must be able to work as a team, meet deadlines, and communicate effectively in the English language. Must be able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously with frequent interruption.
DIVISION MANAGER STREETS

The Division Manager is a full-time, permanent position in the Public Works Department. The immediate supervisor for this position is the General Manager of Public Works. The Incumbent is supervised less than weekly and directly supervises all full-time employees. The Incumbent makes disciplinary decisions and performance appraisals for full time employees. This position frequently requires night work and always on call. Most of the work in this position is outdoors. The position has accountability for monetary, fiscal, budgetary, safety, and legal issues related to the work for which this position is responsible. Responsible for oversight of City drainage and all city streets and oversee all Employees and equipment maintenance. Communicate effectively with residents, elected officials, other City employees, both oral and written. Responsible for general supervision of crews during installation and repairs maintain construction sites throughout the project. Maintain confidentiality, deal with others in a professional manner, maintaining professional composure in heated situations. Review Bids and requests from department heads. Maintain inventory for all divisions; Supervise all emergency repairs, build concrete sidewalk and other related concrete work. Plan long term projects schedule and oversee projects all day; Meet specified and required deadline, make decisions within specified time restraints. Perform other duties as needed. High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. Must have knowledge of Construction material and equipment, technology and drainage skill. Must have a minimum of 3-5 years experiences in a supervisory role. The physical work required is working in tight positions and extreme heat conditions. Must have a valid drivers license.
RECORDS CLERK (Part-Time)/HPD

Ability to deal with the general public, data entry skills, typing skills, computer literate, and knowledge of modern office practices and procedures. Filing of records, reports and data. Answers telephone and take messages. Make copies of requested information heavy typing. Public contact on phone or in person. Maintains accurate records. Performs other duties as assigned. High school graduate or G.E.D.; two (2) years office experience (general clerical) or 1 year office experience and secretarial school completion. Must possess excellent typing skills.
ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER/HPD

Beginning Pay: $8.00/Hr
Drives light duty truck, answers calls and complaints, appears in court to testify, prepares reports, confines animals. Contact owners of animals captured and confined. Performs other duties as assigned. Answers after hours/weekend and holiday calls on a rotating basis. Ability to lift 50lbs or more. Ability to pass a fitness exam if necessary. Knowledge of geography of the city. Skill in driving light trucks (valid drivers license). Excellent communication skills. Must have computer skills. Knowledge of skills in capture of animals. Ability to analyze situations requiring action. Ability to handle situations requiring physical stamina. Maintains accurate case files. Issues “notices of violation” and “municipal offense tickets” as necessary. Testifies in court. High school diploma or G.E.D.; ability to demonstrate proficiency to perform above duties.
CREW FOREMAN

This is a skilled supervisory position overseeing and ensuring that all maintenance, repair, and other service to the water lines are accomplished. The incumbent is supervised on a daily basis and supervises up to five people occasional night work is required. The incumbent has accountability for safety, and legal issues related to the work for which the position is responsible. The equipment operator is exposed to various chemicals and./or hazardous materials only in the event of emergencies. Assist crew workers in rereading meters and changing out meters. Assist crew members in locating and fixing leaks, and work with the crews on the cut-off trucks in dealing with customers. Train new crew members on finding and reading meters. Maintain a log of tickets requesting various services. Knowledge of streets and addresses of the City of Hattiesburg. Knowledge of proper installation of water taps, and OSHA standards and regulations concerning employee safety, and proper use of equipment. Mathematical skills, and general functions and operations of municipal government. Meet specified or required deadlines, and maintain professional composure in heated situations. Follow departmental and city policies, procedures and communicate effectively with residents, elected officials and other city employees, etc. High school diploma or G.E.D. supervisory experience above line foreman level of at least two (2) years. Planning and coordination skills are extremely important; record keeping skills are essential. Must have a valid driver license.
